1970s

The late 60's and early '70s were interesting times at Bowles, we:

  • toughed out the tear and pepper gases on most spring days.
  • held mid-night fire drills with streaking events,
  • created waterfalls down the central stairs,
  • conducted group spell-outs on the socker field that sent messages to the police and KGO chopper pilots,
  • consumed mystery-meat almost every night, Then did 11pm burger runs just before Star Trek reruns,
  • held keggers on the hill protecting the "C" during big game week,
  • should not forget some of those "X" rated displays during big game week.

Those were interesting days at CAL.  Best wishes to all:

Those were my Klipsch speakers from '76 - '79 and I still have them and the album that I picked up used at Rather Ripped Records that we used as a replacement after the previous one disappeared.  I remember that once we had the police come and say that they had received a complaint from all the way down on Parker St. - well on the other side of campus.  I went through quite a few fuses on those speakers. The song was played 15 minutes before each final.

We can give our undying thanks to Rich Girerd (410 center room, then 410B) for the Suicide serenades. He inherited the BHA A/V responsibilities somewhere around 1971 and was particularly fond of M*A*S*H. This places us squarely in the 16mm movie projector era and Rich (aka "Weasel") was quite a master at its manipulation.

Speakng of "M.A.S.H", I fondly recall that during Finals weeks, someone placed his Klipche speakers in his room window facing the courtyard and down the hill, occasionally serenading everyone with M.A.S.H. theme song "Suicide is Painless".

TV Guide,

I remember those nights before Star Trek, but they were on after M*A*S*H, a bit earlier in the evening! And who could forget the water fights, the "Annual Rites of Spring" streaking down to the campus!

Hey Steve, I remember you well. In my first quarter at Cal, I'm pretty sure you had the room next to mine (mine was 503 I think making yours 502). It was the 5th floor for sure and my room was the last room before the hall turned south. Remember Uncle Gary and the pinball machine? Jim Stam and his pet iquana? Igor the dog? Remember playing "beer hunter" with the soda machine? Mrs. Cloninger's flying pancakes? "Take Two" Ernie (the cook, don't remember his last name). After my first quarter, I spent the remaining 3 2/3 years at Bowles in Room 101A. Howard Spindel '71 to '75
